Well, as that last post may have tipped you off, my family pet had to be put down a while back. He was quite old. Aaaaaaand, I can’t look at the front page of this blog without choking up seeing his little puppy face, and I’m kind of tempted to delete that post entirely, particularly as I’m trying to put some distance between my real-life self and the Nútsjesmoar persona. This thought occurs to me. I’ve wasted almost a year of my life building up some online identity that:

A. no one really notices or cares about,

B. does little good for me or anyone else other than allow me a way to vent my secretive opinions and anxieties,

C. doesn’t really have much to do with who I am in real life, other than in terms of my private thoughts/feelings

D. has eaten up massive amounts of time I should have been working or doing real things with real people in the real world rather than sitting by myself in front of a screen feeling disconnected with reality,

E. has seriously screwed up my job, finances, relationships with family and friends, and my personal life in general

F. has emotionally and spiritually numbed me (perhaps on some level I desired this, especially during times of grief and personal challenge)

G. probably isn’t as funny as I think it is most of the time

Letter “F” particularly sticks out at me now. Last year and the year before that on September 8th, I went to my cousin’s grave on the anniversary of his birthday. This year I didn’t even go. It stuck in the back of my mind all day, but in my numbness I sought escape in other electronic diversions until the day was completely past, and it was too late and dark out to go to the graveyard. Over the past year or so, I’ve been increasingly vexed by strange and indescribable dreams of Lovecraftian abstractness, strange forms and formulas and realms of impossible geometry and freefalling motion juxtaposed with illogical dialogue and unfamiliar-yet-familiar characters, all adding up to a cacophonous paranoia-inducing milieu of freakitude. Upon waking from one of these dreams, I often feel, or am struck by the awful and overwhelming feeling that over the past 2 years or so I have become, less human. Something in me no longer wants to be human. Is this so? Did this come about in reaction to something, or was it always there hiding beneath the surface? Has this been the underlying theme of all my dreams, all the way back to childhood, and only recently I am coming to realize it? Am I mad? Am I losing all sanity? Will I ever be happy again? Is there any way to stop myself from going down this self destructive path? It fills me with dread.

Last night I dreamed about Mickey. For some reason he was alive again, but he could only stay around for a day. He was still old and miserable, and he wasn’t much fun. But God I loved having that dog around again for a few fleeting unreal moments. I fucking hate these kinds of dreams. I haven’t had a dream with William in it for a long time now. I wonder if that’s of my own doing? Have I really sublimated all my memories of him so completely? Is there any sense in which someone who tries so hard to forget or not think about someone they’ve lost can still be considered human? Is there any chance for redemption for such a monster?

So that, in a nutshell, is where I’m at right now.

Land O' Tha Lost

Today on my TV picture-box machine, I saw something that shocked and confused my tiny primitive ape-like mind. Apparently, Will Ferrell is making a movie called ‘Land of the Lost.’ One assumes then, that this is a comedy film? *Insert confused grunting noise here.* The confusion only deepened upon further research. My memory of the Land of the Lost franchise is as follows: I remember the series from the early 90′s when I was a kid, they played it on weekends on Nickelodeon, and it was much less of a Will Ferrell-style comedy as much as a campy, slightly scary show involving a cheesy animated T-Rex with an eye condition who was constantly trying to kill everyone, with maybe occasional lighthearted or humorous moments. Mostly though I remember the show as being a cross between dark and goofy, with enough corny green-screen effects to please any Saturday morning sci-fi fan, and a bikini-clad, stone-cold, stone-age, not-technically-an-actual-cavegirl to put Doctor Who’s Leela to shame. Not to mention that jammin’ themesong -
 

They opened the doors, and found dinosaurs! Who wouldn’t be compelled by such lyrical genius? That’s why it’s stuck with me throughout the years, you see. And yet, and yet! My research indicates that the show I knew from Saturdays on Nickelodeon was not the first version of the show either, but a remake of an original show frem the 1970′s! That might explain all the eerie similarities to Doctor Who’s campy lizard-like-alien-riddled cheese parade. This vintage LOTL, though, apparently had what is quite possibly the least-rockin’ theme song of all time. Hillbilly banjo music? No please. I’m guessing this Ferrell flick is based on the older version, since the previews I’ve seen thus far have been completely sans-cave-babe. I don’t know what kind of a show this seventies version was, but I’m guessing though that it wasn’t a Ferrell-style comedy either. Maybe it’s just another case of taking old retro shows that weren’t comedies and turning them into goofy comedy films, a la Dukes of Hazzard, Starsky & Hutch, etc., etc., etc., etc. (aka I can’t think of any more, but I feel like there are and it’s late at night and I’m too tired to think clearly right now.) What I want to know is, when is the 1990′s version going to get a film adaptation (and not some crappy Ben Stiller comedy or whatever) – and for that matter, when are all my other favorite Snick shows from my childhood going to get film adaptations? I’m still waiting for The Secret World of Alex Mack: The Movie. That Larisa Oleynik was a such a sweet cutie pie. (Ah early puberty memories) Hey, while we’re at it – Rocko’s Modern Life on the silver screen, anyone?

On that (again) highly coherent and logical note, I fear I must leave you, gentle reader. I leave you with this final thought:

Urgh! Society is too uptight. I’m so sick of living among this species. I’m telling you, animals have it made. It’s so unbearable with this recent heatwave to wear restrictive clothing. Sometimes you just want to scratch yourself in various places on your torso. If you’re an animal, it’s totally cool. You think squirrels get offended when they see another squirrel scratching its crotch? Only if that squirrel is doing it in their tree maybe, but that’s a matter of turf. Squirrels are crazy about their turf, man. Ow, my neck hurts. A lot. Jeez. Just once I’d like to meet some people who weren’t completely uptight and insecure about their bodies and being living beings. I don’t know how much longer I can deal with society before I just go completely bananas and have to go run off and live in the woods like a monkey. On a questionably related subject, I’m so farkin’ sick of being a virgin. To make up for these years and years of celibacy, I feel I’ve worked up a sex-debt. I’ll need to have sex round the clock with dozens of random strangers to make up for it. Yes. This is a good idea.

On that clearly mature and logical note, I fear I must retire for the evening, gentle reader. My brain is too tired to continue with the random stupid thought-makings.

Yes, it’s about time for some more Earthbound/Mother series content for your “enjoyment.” If it’s true that the Mother series is, conceptually speaking, a lighthearted take on a Japanese person’s concepts and stereotypes of American culture, then apparently the average concept of Americans is that we like to jam out in front of strangers with up-tempo singing and dancing to slightly cheesy, bluesy cowboy rock with ridiculously chauvinistic lyrics. Of course, you might be less likely to notice how corny and pig-headed the words are – if the singer didn’t sound like a castrated choirboy with a thick Japanese accent and mouth full of cotton-balls:

“Half of a man” indeed. Seriously, though, that voice may be obnoxious and the lyrics unbearably vapid, but just try listening to that tune and not tap your toes. God, why do I love this song so hard? It makes no sense. Of course, I’m just being a nitpicky jerk. The fact that such a cool song was put into a game that’s almost 20 years old, along with a whole choreographed dance routine, just blows my mind. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they just don’t make games like this anymore. If the mind-numbing falsetto of the last video wasn’t your cup of tea, perhaps you’ll enjoy the original, wordless NES version:

Say you’ve got a company that sells lampshades. Not just any lampshades, mind you, these are world-class, top-of-the-line lampshades with singular craftsmanship and industrial-strength materials. You decide to try your hand at marketing your company, Lampshades, Inc., in the online realm – but traffic is slow to start up, and you the web marketer, in a state of pure desperation find yourself up late one evening combing through your web analytics program for some glimmer, some small prayer of a clue as to who it is that’s visiting your site, just a tiny glimpse into the mind of the elusive creature known as the “customer.” You see that only one single solitary search term has been used to locate your site through the major search engines. Some soul out there in cyberspace has encountered your site by typing the following cryptic search term into Google’s search engine:

…That’s not all though! Not only did someone find your website once by typing in this eloquent sentence into their outdated Netscape web browser, they actually happened upon your site on five separate occasions by typing in the same garbled phrase, your web analytics program tells you. Now, certainly, it’s almost 100% certain that this was the same person all five times, probably mistakenly hitting the ‘back’ button on their browser and then clicking the link again, but maybe, just maybe.. I mean five times? Seriously? Five times?!?! Your undying belief in humanity won’t allow you to accept that someone that stupid could actually exist.
Which means… maybe.. maybe more than one person searched for

“whar i can find lampshad for my hed at partys wooooo im drunk”

through Google’s search engine. Dizzy from sleep deprivation and an excess of caffeine, your mind swims with possibilities.. maybe you’ve been ignoring a key vertical niche market – drunk people at parties! You could start a whole line of fashion headdresses for tipsy persons that double as quality industrial strength lamplight-diffusion fixtures! You can see it now! It’s not just a lampshade, it’s a Chapeau for the Sloshed! You’ll offer an entire line of Hammered Haute-Couture! You’ll usher in a new era of Shitfaced Chic! You can barely resist the urge to immediately login to your ftp server and gut that smelly old website and start fresh at www.KeggerVogue.com – all this because for a brief second those little numbers on the screen filled you with hope and ambition. Of course, in actuality it was just some dumb lush who happened to get access to a computer during the peak of their inebriation, probably searching for lampshades as a joke just to show their drunk friends who weren’t really paying attention.

That’s not to say that you couldn’t be successful with such a venture, who knows. People do love their booze. I know it sure is tempting to try and piece together some sort of meaning in the little scraps of information you can glean from web statistics when you’re a small, low-traffic website, though – but the truth is probably closer that what you’re doing is mostly speculation.

The rough thing about this whole deal is that you can only really make any kind of definite conclusions about the numbers when you have a high traffic site to begin with. So if MegaLampshadeDepot.com changes an aspect of their site layout and suddenly traffic takes a huge hit, they know what went wrong. If they change some aspect of their SEO program and suddenly they’re getting dozens of extra hits a day from people searching for some kind of kinky porn (I’m sure lampshade must be a sexual term for something – if not, someone will probably turn it into one soon enough) they can have a pretty good idea of where they need to make a change. These tactics though, sadly, don’t usually apply much to your average little site out there in the series of tubes that is Internetland.

However, I don’t wish to end this post on a note of despair. So! Here’s a special little marketing hint or insight from me to you – so, in the past year or so that I’ve had this blog-site, the #1 most viewed page on the entire site has been the one entitled “Goodies.” In fact, “Goodies” has had almost double the traffic of even the “About” page. Apparently, people’s curiosity over what the hell ‘Nútsjesmoar’ means is actually secondary to their desire for “Goodies,” whatever that might mean. I don’t know if they’re thinking they’re going to get free candy, or see some kind of explicit photos of my own “goodies”, or what thought process draws people in such numbers at the offer of free stuff like that, but there you go. In conclusion: if you want to drive traffic to a certain part of your website, just entitle it “Goodies,” and watch the numbers stream in.

Uhh.. where to begin. Obviously a lot has changed since whenever the heck it was I last posted an entry here. I think I wasn’t quite taking this blog seriously for a while, but as long as I’ve got it I might as well make it useful, yeah? I’ve always got lots of ideas floating around in my head about philosophical meaning of life mumbo-jumbo, opinions about the news, culture, faith, frog-faced celebrities, etc. Couldn’t hurt to share. While I’m at it I could always use a good place to gripe about all my woes. Or share some info about my job and what I do there.

So I think I’ll try to do some more of that kind of stuff. There may not be many people who ever visit this place, but maybe if I make it a little less sucky and update more often that can change as well. I’ll try to share as much interesting stuff with you cyber friendly folks as possible. News, videos, stories, ideas, artworks, info about other websites, my job, etc., this could be a cool place to share all that stuff with the world.

Whatever small fragment of my soul still lives on inside the mostly hollow shell that is my body is weeping its eyes out while the rest of me giggles. I’m very sad. Must be the time of year. I guess I must still be missing you.

Well, it’s been awhile since I last posted anything about Mabinogi, and seeing as a whole Generation and a half has passed since then, maybe it’s time I got back on the bandwagon.

Well, looking back, it looks like I was wild with hero-worship of that Batsu guy, but looking back, should I have been? Bangor was important, since for some reason North America’s Walter doesn’t actually sell the cooking gear that the online faq’s say he does. Nor does Glenda or anybody except the chick in Bangor. Which was why I was so frustrated that it took so long to open Bangor. But then G1 rolled along and I rebirthed and got a new outlook on life – and fished til I couldn’t fish no more!

Also, I think it was in G1 that I relocated my friend “KenichiCutie” from Maple Story, now going by Aurafey. That was cool. Heh, if by some wild chance she’s out there reading this, just want to say “congratulations!” again. Well, anyway, rebirthing is pretty awesome to the max as well, I must admit. I don’t get the two AP-per character-age-year that I used to, but there’s plenty of perks to getting a fresh start. Unfortunately, at this point in G2 I’ve already blown most of my NX cash on random stuff like my two rebirths, extra storage, a pet wolf, etc.

Arlak is my pet wolf’s name. Having a wolf pet is quite badass, if you ask me. Anyway, Extra storage is great because I’ve been able to open an in-game store. Which raises a whole bunch of other opportunities/complications.

Opportunites: money. I’ve always been short on it, but with a store it flows in like never before! I left Arlak in charge of my shop in Tir Chonaill and left on foot to Bangor to buy a Claymore for 31,000g. I sent it to the store in Tir selling at 41K and about a halfhour later, someone actually bought it – I made an instant 10K profit for almost no effort on my part! Booyah! That maybe seems shady, but honestly I’m trying to be fair in my in-world business practices – it’s just the smart thing to do to keep customer loyalty – and I don’t think the markup was too terribly unfair – they would’ve had to run half way around the continent on foot to reach Bangor, through some dangerous territory with Kobolds, etc., so I saved them a trip at a marginal markup price.

Complications: what to do after the Extra storage runs out. Unlike a lot of cash shop items in Maple Story, which last about 2-3 months, the cash shop features in Mabinogi only last a month, so in order to keep extra storage, I’ll have to keep paying the 10$ a month or whatever it is, or have all my items that are currently building up in my storage areas be deleted or have to be sold/thrown away. Blech, this is an unpleasant idea to me. This experience of owning a shop has certainly been positive, but I need to make sure I make as much profit from it as possible this month and then sell all my extra stuff and reorganize my spaces, because I don’t think I can afford to spend so much money every month on this game.

Emain Macha is open now in G2, which is frickin’ awesome. Also, I was recently invited into the Resonance guild. They seem pretty nice, but I haven’t gotten to know them all very well. Well, this turned out a lot longer than I thought it would. I think I’ll leave you with some screenshots of me and Arlak runnin’ around G1 & G2, havin’ fun.

Just a brief update about some new stuff on this site.

The “About” section has a new page available, all about your favorite non-egoist, Me. Me me me me me. Humble little me. But I don’t like to go on about myself and how great I am. The “Goodies” section is revamped, and is now awesome to the max. Furthermore, it’s now both ill and fresh to death. Most notably, there’s links now to the mp3′s of the 4 tribes of norlan pieces I wrote, feel free to download ‘em, I just ask that you don’t use them for commercial purposes. It’s important to respect the creative process. Well, I guess this isn’t really a whole lot of new stuff, but I haven’t posted in a while, so there it is. I know we’re at least getting a little traffic here, probably mostly from the Mother3 fan translation. The counter says “1,338 visits” right now, and only about 1,000 or so of those could possibly be myself. Which still leaves 300-some visits. Which is truly awesome to the max. I promise my post will have more substance next time.

I recently found out about a program called FL (Fruity Loops) Studio, which offers a free limited trial version of the software, which is great because it allows me to do what I’ve been wanting to do for a long time – write music files for my computer (mp3′s and midi specifically) which also allows me to write original music for the Tribes of Norlan games which I’m working on in RPG Maker XP. So far, I’ve already written 4 original tracks for “Tribes of Norlan: The Serpentking” as well as creating the album artwork for the OST, once the game takes off and becomes a worldwide hit (can anyone say “God complex?”)

Don’t laugh too hard. Also, I know using a program like RPGXP is kind of cheating, but I’m too dumb, poor, and lacking in free time to learn how to program games from scratch on my own. So cheating it is. Anyways, I get a little experience with Ruby from working with RPGXP, even though it’s tedious and alien to me. Seriously, it took like 4 days of spending all my free time after work to figure out how to create the special text boxes with character portraits that you get a glimpse of right at the end there as General Karlon begins to speak. Man, it’s so much less impressive without thunder booms though.. oh well.

I do wish [Adult Swim] would play more shows that I can actually stand.. and that they would stop moving the anime shows later and later on Saturday nights.. seriously, I have to stay up until like 1:30 to see a new episode of Bleach. Bishes. Ooh, ooh, but here, watch a rerun of Venture Bros. you’ve already seen 14 times before.. I mean for an [AS] cartoon, Venture Bros. is pretty awesome, especially considering it was produced by those Williams Street ************s. Hey, let’s do a live action show featuring two really unfunny comedians doing nothing for a half hour! Or poorly animated squids! Or stuff that isn’t animated at all, or that abomination ‘renegade angel’ show that made me want to shoot myself. I can’t even watch more than half an hour of [AS] on weeknights anymore. Well, at least I’m getting some regular sleep hours for once…

But remember that saxophone solo at the very end of the song? I’ve had the last few notes of that solo stuck on a repeating loop in my head ALL DAY so far today. Nah-nah-nah-nah.. WAH-nehr, WAH-nehr, WAH-nehr, WAH-neh-Wah-nerrr…… needless to say, it’s very annoying.

Oh, and then I went to Szechuan Garden down the street for lunch (alone mind you), and my fortune cookie said something about how there is a “deep and meaningful friendship between you both” (emphasis mine) WTF? I don’t have anybody like that in my life.. I hardly have any friends left that I’m in contact with. I think my food is mocking me. How’s that for paranoia?

One of the main things that makes Mabinogi different from say, a game like Maple Story, is the sheer depth of it. It’s still young in North America, but in Korea, its nation of origin, Mabinogi has gone through several of what are called “generations” – in which new features, characters, and options are introduced. As stated, in NA we have yet to reach G1, Generation 1, in which the cash shop and rebirthing options would appear. However there is still much to be explored even at these early stages.

The skills system is really rich and highly developed in Mabinogi, in fact it’s the main thrust of character development, as opposed to say Maple Story where the goal only seems to be constant (ever more tedious) grinding and leveling up over time to get more powerful. In MS I’m currently at level 40 or 41 I believe, which seems huge to me, but then there’s level 60, 70, and 120 people running around left and right so I’m really not that hot. I liked my wizard though, and I feel unsure about ditching Maple Story completely, but it just sucks up way too much time that, especially as a young adult, I just don’t really have. I guess a similar temptation exists with Mabinogi, but at least there seems to be less of an emphasis on/necessity for grinding in Mabi. As stated, character development revolves more around skills, which are way more varied and open than in Maple Story.

In this way, I feel Mabinogi more closely resembles a true RPG, in the vein of old school tabletop rpgs, in that there’s a higher likelihood for “in-character” roleplaying, a more involved and robust character development system, which is a central part of gameplay, and just a lot more openness and freedom of choice/chances to explore. I particularly love the music system, any game that could incorporate music theory into action/adventure/roleplaying is like a wet dream for a music geek like myself. I love transcribing music from my favorite old school video games like ‘Pollyanna’ from Earthbound, and retro classic rock type songs that no one else remembers as well as my own compositions and just rocking out on that lute all night long around the campfire. Awesome…

Basically, I’m trying not to put to much time into improving my character’s combat skills, other than increasing his magic spell powers, but sinking more ability points (AP) into skills I find interesting/fun, like music, cooking, and tailoring. I know, I know, if this was real life that would seem kinda gay, but isn’t that what expansive online fantasy worlds are for? Bein’ just a little bit gayer than you get to be in real life, and still getting away with it..

If you play Mabinogi, or are thinking about starting but need a friend in-world to help you along, my character handle is the same as in Maple Story, “Dendrof.” I’m in the Ruairi server on Mabinogi North America and due to the unfortunate fact that I actually have a real life, I’m only usually on during the weekends. Eastern Standard Time Zone.

I hear all these great things about wordpress, how customizable and userfriendly it is, and after my tiff with LiveJournal (namely, they put Scientology ads on my blog and gave me no way to remove them – grrr! ) I thought, “awesome, wordpress sounds freakin sweet.” Their own site makes themselves sound like everything I’ve ever been looking for in a weblog. And getting started was relatively easy and userfriendly. However…. ugh. It seems there’s always a catch or three.

First off, one thing everyone should know about me is that I’m dutch, and therefore terribly cheap. I hate paying for things that I think should be free. Namely, I’m talking about being able to CSS modify my blog. I would’ve thought that would come free, like on Blogger, but apparently not, it cost $15 and I sort of semi-unintentionally already bought that. Plllt. So now I’ve blown $15 on a year of CSS customization on this blog, but I’m not even sure if I like WordPress yet or not. I mean, the text editor is very awkward and ungainly. I can’t even insert “</br>” tags in the html for some reason, and when I put in “<p></p>” tags instead, any time I go back to edit the html, they get deleted. Was this system designed by monkeys or something? Seriously… Ack.

So now I’ve sampled the fare from almost every major blog provider I’ve ever heard of – Blogger, Xanga, MySpace(blech, I almost hesitate to include it), LiveJournal, and now the oh-so-godly WordPress.. (aaahh angels singing in background).. and honestly, in terms of what offers the most benefits for the lowest cost (free), Blogger comes out on top. My problem with Blogger is their site always seems so slow, and adding new posts can be tedious under such circumstances.. but geez.. maybe it’s time I went back.. NO! I’m already straddling two blogs as it is, a third one is just going to f*ck everything up. I can’t seem to import my LiveJournal entries to WordPress, despite how ‘easy’ WP claimed that would be. And God help me, I’m still fond of that stupid LiveJournal of mine (despite the ads which I HATE HATE HATE HATE!!)

So who knows. Maybe I’ll grow to like this one better. It’s certainly snazzier looking, and I’ve already spent fifteen bucks on it, so I should at least stick around for a while. We’ll see. Grr.. blogging for free is a frustrating business indeed.. maybe I should just get my own website.. yeah right.. CURSE YOU DUTCH GENES!!!! LET ME SPEND MONEY FRIVOLOUSLY FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE!!!!!
